Top 5 reasons the BlackBerry 9780 kicks ass
When you think mobile e-mail you think BlackBerry. The two have gone hand in hand for many years and with good reason, too. RIM's exacting standards, reliable e-mail service and sturdy, durable devices have led the company to enjoy loyal support for over a decade and with its changing ethos it's not too much of a stretch to picture them enjoying the same level of support ten years from now.
Their latest device, the Bold 9780, puts forward a new outlook from the Canadian manufacturer, one which embraces the social-networking, media consumer age which we find ourselves in, without diluting its hard-earned business pedigree. What's so great about the BlackBerry Bold 9780? We hear you ask. Well, that's an easy one:
Camera
The new Bold is the first of its kind to offer a 5-megapixel camera with flash. Previous incarnations of the device have all disappointed with lacklustre 3.2-megapixel efforts but with the 9780 you can take nice, high quality snaps with no effort at all thanks to the enhanced camera interface and autofocus functionality. Video capture is a little on the ordinary side at 640 x 480 but just because it isn't 720P HD doesn't mean it isn't functional and watchable.
Internals
RIM have doubled the RAM on offer in the 9780 to 512MB, which allows the new incarnation of its mobile operating system BlackBerry OS6 to fly along with no discernible lag, it also means you'll spend more time communicating and less time staring at that cursed egg-timer! The processor, which is clocked at 624MHz, is the same as its predecessor, and while we would have liked a bump in processor size we understand where the saying 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' comes from as the CPU chugs along nicely.
E-Mail
Staying in touch is what having a BlackBerry is all about and the industry standard e-mail service is as good as it ever was. Offering encryption and unrivalled reliability you can count on your messages getting where they need to go. Setting up your email is simple too, and within a few minutes of turning your device on for the first time your e-mails will be coming through to you in real-time.
Apps
You'll have access to the excellent BlackBerry App World on your 9780, which has hundreds of top-quality applications, which will keep you productive, occupied, and in touch. Because of BlackBerry's business heritage you'll often find the quality of apps available superior to those on competing devices, though some do come at a premium which is paid simply via your PayPal account.
Keyboard
BlackBerry keyboards are known for being responsive, reliable and fast to type on and the Bold 9780's is no exception. With little acclimatisation you'll be bashing out e-mail's, blog updates and word documents like they're going out of fashion.
The new universal search function, which comes as part of BlackBerry OS6, also makes excellent use of the keyboard – simply start typing something on any screen and you'll see real-time results. Looking for a contact, just start typing their name and up they pop, looking for an app enter the first couple of letters and there it is! Efficiency is the buzzword here and with the help of the solid, dependable QWERTY on the 9780 you'll find it as efficient a device as any you've ever used.
While physical differences between the 9700 and 9780 are minimal they are present, the improved camera adds a great new dimension and the upped RAM makes a significant improvement to an already solid and pleasing device. It also allows the 9780 to run the new BlackBerry OS6 as RIM intended, making the 9780 a worthwhile upgrade on its predecessor. So there you have it! Another great device from those Canadian boffins – get out and get yours today!
