Top 5 Premium Smartphones

With the current level of hardware available, even the most budget friendly smartphone can offer plenty of bang for your buck but sometimes it's nice to go premium, and treat yourself to the very best that money can buy. If that time has come and you're getting ready to invest in the very paragon of smartphone technology then look no further than this, our take on the very best smartphones on the market.

iPhone 4 - What better smartphone to start with than the ubiquitous iPhone 4, a device which divides opinion almost as well as it pushes boundaries. Contrary to some opinions, the iPhone 4 is more than just a fashion statement – it's a cutting-edge smartphone that offers users the very best of features, including a 1GHz Apple A4 processor, 512MB RAM, a stellar 5-megapixel camera capable of 720P video capture and the pinnacle of mobile display technology, Apple's very own Retina Display, which allows you to view your media in a truly lifelike 326PPI (pixels per inch). If you want to make a bold statement without sacrificing power and versatility, the iPhone should be your number one choice.

LG Optimus 2X - LG's pocket powerhouse, the Optimus 2X, has set the standard by which all other smartphones will be judged. The device is positively bristling with next-gen technology, affording the user an unparalleled mobile experience. The Optimus 2X is powered by Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor, which offers not one, but two 1GHz cores to allow your apps to fly. You're also treated to 512MB RAM, a 4-inch high resolution display, 8GB of on-board storage and an amazing 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080P video capture! The whole package is finished off admirably by Google's Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system, which will soon make way for an update to the amazing Gingerbread (version 2.3), making the Optimus 2X as close to the complete smartphone as you can get.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 - If messaging is your game then you should look no further than RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9780. The Bold offers users everything they've come to expect from enterprise leaders RIM, such as an amazingly responsive hardware QWERTY, super reliable enterprise standard e-mail service (which, of course, includes unsurpassed levels of security), long battery life and the super-intuitive BlackBerry 6OS. The Bold 9780 is powered by a reliable 624MHz CPU with 512MB RAM, so you won't have to worry about lag. You're also treated to a 5-megapixel camera if you invest in a Bold, so you won't have to miss those magic moments!

HTC Desire HD - HTC's big screen game changer is a great device and one worthy of a place in this elite top 5. Packing a huge 4.3-inch display and Dolby Mobile and SRS sound enhancements, the Desire HD is a movie and music lovers dream but its virtues don't end there. The device is powered by an impressive 1GHz Scorpion processor from market leaders Qualcomm, and a whopping 768MB RAM, making the Desire HD as speedy as it is good looking. Also on offer is an 8-megapixel camera which offers 720P video capture, so you needn't compromise on any feature when you choose a Desire HD. The device is powered by version 2.2 (Froyo) of Google's Android operating system, which will soon be upgraded to 2.3 (Gingerbread), meaning that your device will get even speedier in the near future!

Motorola ATRIX - It's a bit sneaky of us to include the ATRIX in this list as it isn't out for another week or two, but we couldn't compile a list of the top smartphone's without mentioning it. Powered by the same dual-core Tegra 2 CPU as LG's Optimus 2X, the ATRIX offers amazing speed for multi-tasking and gaming, the device also offers 1GB RAM, a high-end 5-megapixel camera capable of 720P video capture (which will be upgraded to 1080P with an impending firmware update), a vivid 4-inch Gorilla Glass display and packs biometric security. Simply scan your fingerprint to confirm who you are and gain access to all your media and information.

Motorola's ATRIX will also offer support for their unique Dock/Laptop which allows you to turn your super-powered smartphone into the power plant of a true mobile computer.

So take your pick from one of these world beaters if you're after the very best. They won't disappoint, we assure you.
